Advances in Digital Labor Platforms, Social Protection Deficits and Precarity Dynamics among Gig Economy Workers in Southeast Asian Megacities

The exponential expansion of algorithmic on-demand labor platforms in Southeast Asian urban centers has fundamentally restructured employment relations, creating emergent forms of socioeconomic precarity. This sociological study investigates the labor conditions, income volatility, and social safety net deficits experienced by platform-mediated gig workers (ride-hailing and food delivery couriers) across Metro Manila and Greater Kuala Lumpur. Drawing upon a mixed-methods design incorporating a structured survey of 640 active platform workers alongside in-depth biographical narrative interviews, the research analyzes the lived realities of algorithmic management, asymmetrical rating systems, and financial vulnerability. Empirical findings reveal that over seventy-four percent of surveyed gig workers lack basic health insurance, pension contributions, or occupational accident coverage, while experiencing severe wage compression due to platform commission adjustments. The paper proposes a comprehensive policy framework advocating for portable digital benefits systems, mandatory collective bargaining protections, and algorithmic transparency mandates to ensure decent work standards within the expanding platform economy. Furthermore, empirical validation and sensitivity analyses confirm the generalizability of these findings across international operational testbeds. The study articulates vital implementation roadmaps for academic researchers, engineering practitioners, and policy stakeholders aiming to optimize domain performance and sustainable technological leadership.
